Old Lathrisk

 Welcome to Well-being

ABOUT

Jo and Mike Aitken are the current owners of Old Lathrisk, a 16th century Scottish country house near Falkland. As Jo explains - We have have a long connection with this area. On his return from the Crimean War, my Great Great Grandfather, Major William Wood lived in Falkland Palace with his wife Jane and their 10 children. My family have lived here at Old Lathrisk in this tranquil retreat since 1970 and we would love to have you share our beautiful home and garden.

We have two unique self catering spaces on the ground floor, The Studio and The Vaults, both sleeping up to 4 people. They can be booked together if required and have an interconnecting door.

The large and interesting garden is open for guests to wander around and find quiet places for reflection. We encourage visits to the local historic village of Falkland with its Palace, cafes, gift shops and to Falkland Estate for walks, followed by tea and scones at the award winning Pillars of Hercules Organic Cafe.

We are happy to give advice on places of interest, activities in the area and Scotland in general. Our hope for the future of Old Lathrisk is that it will remain a place of creative well being and attract like minded souls to benefit from this special place we are lucky enough to call home.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

We also run events in the house and garden. Our plan is to develop organically, following the seasons and the energy they bring. We are open to ideas and keen to encourage the healing arts, connection with nature, painting, baking and cooking, yoga, music, mindfulness, creative writing, walking and cycling. Please get in touch if you have an idea.

Mike plays percussion and we enjoy having musicians round for a wee session. We'd like to hold house concerts in future.

Jo practises mindfulness, reflexology and yoga and hosts courses organised by wonderful facilitators. On of our favourite pastimes is eating socially -  “We cook and garden as organically as we can and grow a fair amount of our own produce. There are regular family celebrations held here like weddings, christenings and special birthdays. Our motto is - any excuse for a party!”

Current Events at Old Lathrisk

Mindfulness for Life with Jo Aitken and Wendy Simpson - A Spring Mindfulness Course, 4 x Thursdays 1.00-5.00pm.

January 23rd, 30th, February 6th and 13th. £160

This is a small group course to help you incorporate mindfulness into your daily life, to reduce striving and develop a deepening sense of gratitude.

We will facilitate an established course, called Mindfulness for Life, an in-depth introduction to mindfulness which is designed to empower you to develop a nourishing and resilient personal mindfulness practice. You will receive a personal manual to help guide you through the course and remind you of the concepts and practices. You will be invited to take part in all the standard mindful practices which you will be able to continue doing at home.  We will also introduce some activities and videos to encourage personal reflection and will have plenty time for group discussions. We will have a break for a cuppa and chat in the middle of each session. Some of the feedback from our previous participants:

'It has been such a tonic retreating to your quiet idyll'

'Thank you for introducing me to the wonderful world of mindfulness...I'm glad and grateful to you and Wendy for your gentle support and encouragement'

'I was amazed at how relaxed and safe I felt within the group.  There was no pressure to share or to speak unless we wanted to.  Everyone conducted themselves in a non-judgemental, respectful way and allowed each other time to speak.  I really liked the structure of the course and the relaxing sounds of the sound bowl, the crackle of the fire and the birds during the meditations.'

This course is very popular so please get in touch if you wish to attend. To book your place, payment for the 4 week course can be made in advance by contacting  jo@oldlathrisk.co.uk or 07843 419946.

GUEST REVIEW

A very interesting location, beautiful apartments kept to the highest standard. The family were extremely welcoming, but also ensured we were given total space and privacy.

We were staying here prior to getting married and this proved to be the perfect tonic for relaxing having arrived from London.

Large living and kitchen area. The bedroom was within a vault and the bed was extremely comfortable, which meant that we slept peacefully.

The fireplace in the living room added to the overall charm.
